Competitor A Standard Staple - Benchmark Stress
A standard staple has stress concentrated in the corners
- Location of the loads on the legs - highest bending force is naturally applied at the corner.
- The corner itself is a stress riser - intrinsic to the corner geometry, where changing the direction of lines of force acting through the cross-section leads to an increase of stress.

Competitor B Standard Staple - Peak Stress Reduced 20%
Gradual and localized thickening of the shoulders ameliorates stresses and moves the location of peak stress to the bridge. (Also increases compressive force)
Competitors have already done this, and we do not want to simply move the weakest link to the bridge.
The bridge spans the fusion site - loads acting upon the bridge naturally reach a maximum value at the center of the bridge, which coincides with the weakest point of the staple.

COGNiTiON™ Staple - Peak Stress Reduced 30%
Full geometry optimization leads to further reduction in peak stress. The peak stress on the bridge is now offset away from the location of maximum applied load.
To accomplish this, the shoulders and bridge share the ap plied loads more uniformly to produce a more favourable stress distribution. (11,642, 124 B2)
